Rev. F. W. Chapman, writing in 1854, identified the third wife of Moses4 Rowley as Sarah Chapman, daughter of Robert Chapman, 3d, born at East Haddam, in 1715. He further mentions that as wife of Rowley, she had two children, and perhaps others. The two children of Moses and Sarah were Sarah, b. 1730 and Nathaniel, b. 1733, both of whom were recorded at East Haddam. However, Donald Lines Jacobus, in Families of Old Fairfield, 2:811, states that one Ebenezer Sanford of Fairfield "m. 14 Feb. 1739/40, Sarah Chapman, dau. of Robert of East Haddam.. She d. 20 Mar. 1809 in 92. yr. (g.s.)." A woman born c. 1715 would have been unlikely to marry a man b. c. 1679 and have borne two children by the age of 18 and a genealogist of Jacobus' stature has placed her at some distance from East Haddam. No other woman born Sarah Chapman appears who fits the age parameters identified by H. W. Brainard, so the most likely conclusion is that she was a Chapman widow who has yet to be identified.
