Facts and Events
A story from his great granddaughter, Darlene Wetzel DeLuco: Samuel supposedly wanted to experience 'religious freedom' when he immigrated to America and decided to give the Baptist church a try while they briefly lived in Oregon. Anton Schmidt, his friend listed as his contact on the immigration records had become a Baptist. Samuel's thirst for religious freedom ended the week he learned he would receive grape juice instead of wine for communion; back to being a Lutheran. Samuel was a peasant so I am certain the quest for wine instead of grape juice had nothing to do with deep spiritual convictions , more to do with the enjoyment of wine! Ended up in Isabel, SD where he had a coffin made and kept it in the attic C was so comfortable that he napped in it each day. References
