    Samuel Price Smith was born at Taneytown Maryland on December 21, 1795, a son of Dr. Joseph Sim Smith who was a Founder of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty. Young Dr. Smith was a member of the Virginia Militia at the Battle of North Point in Baltimore in September of 1814. “Accordingly in 1814, hearing of the American defeat at Bladensburg, Dr. Smith who was then a youth of eighteen years, made haste to join as a volunteer the forces collected for the defense of Baltimore and was present at the bombardment of Fort McHenry.” For his service in the war, he was awarded a pension. Following the war, he became a pupil of Dr. Colin Mackenzie at the Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1817 and settled into practice in Frederick County. In 1817, he moved to Cumberland, Maryland. Dr. Smith was a Member of the Reform Convention, Chairman of the Committee on Education and active in founding the public school system. Dr. Smith was President of the Medical Society of Allegany County from 1867 to 1875. He became Vice President Medical and Chirurgical Faculty in 1854 and 1855 and again in 1856 and 1857. In 1878 and 1879, he became the President of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty. He was a surgeon during the Civil War and also a Member of the Maryland Legislature from 1864 to 1866. Dr. Smith died at Cumberland on March 1, 1882.
