History of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury, Mass. and Their Ancestors and Descendants, p. 187, calls Samuel the "son of Samuel and Mercy", but does not really study the children of Samuel and either wife so has no birth estimate, birth order, evidence or justification for identifying Mercy as his mother. Given the timing of the births of known children, it seems unlikely his mother is Mercy. Ironically, this source uses Samuel's marriage to guess at the identify of first wife Ruth, while assigning Samuel to the second wife. The argument would make more sense possibly if he was the son of the first wife?
Source:Parker, Augustus G. Parker in America, 1630-1910, p. 500, shows Samuel as a child of Samuel and first wife Ruth ---. Ironically, this source is a little sloppy in saying the will mentions "s[on]s Jabez and Samuel" when the two references are actual "Samuel & Jabeth", i.e., Samuel probably the oldest, further supporting that he is most likely a child of the first wife, so born before 1698 when she died.
