moved back to Tx-in poverty. Sam left Lee Co under mysterious circumstances in 1880. Lee Co. Sherriff Heffington had been shot & Sam was under suspicion. Under the alias Sam Bender he met Annie DeLapp in Carroll Co.,MS. Why he went there is unknown but through research the descendants of Titus Howard, Jr. are known to have lived there. The Carroll Co., MS Howards married into the Mullen family & Annie DeLapp herself was a Mullen descendant! All the children born in MS were born under the suname Bender & remember Kittrell was a contemporary of the Bender's in NC. Further research needs to be done on this.
