Hi Bob,

I happened across your query while I was browsing the Loughner family name on the internet.

My father, John Nathaniel Loughner was born in January 1911 in Swissvale PA. He was the only child of Samuel Eli Loughner and Hazel (Booth) Loughner. Swissvale is a tiny little town near Pittsburgh, I believe.

I don't know is this has any relevance to your search but thought it might be interesting to respond.

Sincerely, Sue Loughner" [rewarren.ged]

Samuel E. Loughner, the proprietor of the Michigan Model Airplane Supply Company, is developing a business of large magnitude, which in a measure reflects the growing interest of the country in aviation, and which is also the means of stimulating a greater interest in flying. Mr. Loughner was born in Greensburg, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, in 1888, a son of John and Elizabeth (Sindorf) Loughner, also natives of the Keystone state. The father comes of an old American family, which was established in this country about 1650. John Loughner was an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad nearly all his active life, but both he and his wife are now deceased. Members of the family fought in both of our country's wars with England and four of John Loughner's brothers were soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil war, all surviving the rigors of that great conflict except one who died from exposure and starvation in the notorious Andersonville prison pen. John Loughner tried to enlist but was rejected because of his youth, being but fifteen years old at the time.

Samuel E. Loughner acquired his education in the public schools of Greensburg, after which he learned the machinist's trade, starting at Greensburg but finishing with the Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh. In 1915 he came to Detroit and entered the employ of the Northway Manufacturing Company, with which he remained for three or four years, or until the business was sold to the General Motors Company. After that he worked in various tool jobbing shops in Detroit, gaining valuable practical experience in tool and die making. In 1927 he engaged in his present business, the building of airplane models on a commercial scale, under the name of the Michigan Model Airplane Supply Company, of which he is the sole owner. This has proved very successful and now requires all of Mr. Loughner's attention, with the assistance of his son.

Mr. Loughner was married in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Miss Hazel Booth, who was born and educated in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and they are the parents of a son, Jack, who was born in Pittsburgh. He was graduated from high school in Detroit and is now taking the aeronautical course in the University of Michigan. He is the editor of the Airplane Model and Air Travel News at the University and was the national outdoor champion in 1926-27. Mr. Loughner is a member of Friendship Lodge, No. 417, F. & A. M. His interest in his present business is not altogether a mercenary one, for he is a firm believer in the statement that "the planes of the future will be built by the model makers of today." He is rendering a very definite service to those, both young and old, who are interested in aviation to the extent that model flying has become an attractive and pleasurable sport.
