 I believe he may be the son of Eli L. Huckleberry (~1830-1911) and Emily H. Derry, married 1856 in Sangamon Co.
 In the 1870 census for Illiopolis, Sangamon Co., Illinois, there are listings for Eli Huckleberry 40 Indiana, Emily 30 VA, Mary M. 8 Illinois, Samuel L. 6 IL; and Cora Jane 4 IL. {<http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/sangamon/cemetery/wilcox/huckel.html>}
 I believe he may the the Samuel Huckleberry in the 1880 census for Illiopolis, Sangamon Co., Illinois. Eli L. Huckleberry is a farmer, age 52 from Indiana (parents Kentucky).  His wife Emma H. is 40, born Virginia (parents Virginia).  The children are Samuel, 16, laborer; and Hattie, 9 -- both born Illinois, father Indiana, mother Virginia.  {p.337b}
 In the 1900 census for Mechanicsburg, Sangamon Co., Illinois,  Samuel 'Huckelberry' is 36 born Mar 1864 IL (PA, VA), 'salesman', married 9 years; with wife Effie 30 b. Feb 1870 IL (OH, IN) with 2 of 2 children living; daughters are Emily 8 b. Mar 1892 and Daisy 4 born Oct 1895.
In 1910 they are listed as Samuel, Effie, Emily, Daisy and Ernest 1906; and in 1920 with Daisy and Ernest.
