Samuel Ferguson was born in 1755 in Granville, North Carolina to James and Agnes Ferguson. He grew up loving to hunt. While attending church services as a young man, he fell in love with the bonny Isabella Barber a young woman of Irish birth. Wooing soon followed and they married about June 1780. He and Isabella lived in the house of her father, Samuel Barber. His father in-law and brother in-laws were Whigs. All Samuel's brothers were ardent Loyalists except one, William Ferguson, whom was a Patriot killed shortly after the Battle of the '96. Samuel was a Patriot also, he performed duties in the South Carolina militia under Capt. Steel and furnished supplies to the Revolutionary army. He also secreted supplies for his Whig neighbors, assisted poor women by milking for them and performing other various needful services. Samuel was for many years a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church. He died June 8, 1817 in Chester District, South Carolina and is buried in the Old Catholic Presbyterian Church Cemetery. It has been written that Samuel and Isabella's descendants are among the most worthy citizens of Chester District, South Carolina. (S1)
