Samuel Coup was a jeweler. At one time, from after the 1900 census on 1 June 1900 to 27 April 1904, he lived in Butte, Montana where he pursued his profession. He was married on 29 Octpber 1901 and indicated on his marriage license that he was a resident of Butte. There were notices naming him and his wife in various cultural activities between those dates. Apparently, Butte didn't suite him and he returned to live in Akron, Ohio where he was a widely-known jeweler until his retirement. Obituary, Akron (Ohio) Beacon-Journal, Monday, June 2, 1947, page 16.

Samuel Rice Coup, widely-known Akron jeweler, died Sunday at his home 1128 Jefferson Avenue, after an illness of two weeks. He was 73. A resident of Akron for more than 25 years, Mr. Coup had his office in the First National Bank building for several years. He retired a year ago.

According to Virginia Spearman, he was less aggressive than Cyrus Strickler and William Marshall, Jr. Daisy Frances always said he was the most gentle and the sweetest of the brothers. He was musically talented and also had some acting ability. Samuel also enjoyed amateur theatricals. He also had a great talent for designing jewelry and used it in his jewelry business.

Bill Coup doesn't remember very much about his grandfather because he died when Bill was only six. Bill does remember that he smoked cigars that Bill's mother never liked. It seems that the cigars had a pretty strong odor and she never did get to like them.

These notes and comments were made by Virginia Spearman to William A. Coup. Other comments are from the memory of William A. Coup.

An undated article mentioning "Mr. Coup" that was found with clippings about his future wife, Harriet May Gable.

"Story of the Redemption" 'Repetition of the First Night's Successful Production' The Academy of Music was completely filled again Friday evening at the second performance of the "Story of the Redemption," and the production went, if possible, more smoothly than on the opening night. The dramatic portions were, as before, very strongly rendered and made a most profound impression, especially the Diet scene, in which Mr. Coup again acquitted himself with remarkable ability. The nun and novice scene was capitally presented, and the solos by Mrs. Orris and Miss Moyer and the chorus numbers were beautifully rendered. The entire entertainment was one of the most perfect amateur productions ever given in this city and not only reflects credit upon the persons taking part, the instructor, Miss Brown, and the originator and lecturer, Mrs. Monroe, but testifies to the careful and thoroughgoing management of the whole affair. The entertainment has also served to call public attention to Holy Trinity Lutheran church, which under the pastorate of Rev. A. L. Benze, is doing a decided work for good.
