Samuel Taylor Coulson was baptised on 25th June 1845 at South Kyme in Lincolnshire, son of Susan Couslon, formerly Cowlishaw, and her husband John Coulson, who was described as a boatman at the time of Samuel's baptism, but was later an innkeeper. Samuel grew up at South Kyme with his parents, who ran the Tower Inn. He was apparently sent to a school in Boston for a short time. He claimed to have seen the first train from Sleaford to Boston arrive, which was in 1859.

At the Tower Inn, Samuel helped running the business and also worked as a brewer. In later life he said that the brewing had given him gout because of the constant exposure to steam and hot water.

Samuel did not marry until he was 42 years old. His wife was Elizabeth Ann Cox, who was from Barnack in Northamptonshire, over thirty miles south of South Kyme. She was about twenty years younger than him. They married at Barnack, but returned to South Kyme after their marriage. They had one daughter, Susan Elizabeth, born at South Kyme in 1890. The 1891 census find them living at an unspecified address in South Kyme, with Elizabeth's sister boarding with them and working as a servant, as well as two other boarders.

The 1901 census finds the family specifically listed at the Tower Inn, which Samuel therefore seems to have taken over from his parents. They had one servant living with them at this time. Samuel later recalled that the Tower Inn was demolished around 1907.

By 1911 Samuel, Elizabeth and their daughter were living at the Hume Arms, with two servants. This was a large building, described as having eleven rooms, and Samuel described himself as both a publican and farmer. Samuel ran the Hume Arms until the early 1920s, when he retired.

Samuel's daughter married in the South Kyme area in 1921, then briefly went to live in Ireland, where Samuel's first grandson was born later in 1921 in County Monaghan. Samuel's daughter and her husband then returned to England, settling in the Peterborough area where several more grandchildren followed in the later 1920s.

As one of the oldest residents of South Kyme, Samuel was photographed and interviewed by the local newspaper in 1927.

Elizabeth died in March 1930 at the County Hospital in Lincoln, aged 65.

After Elizabeth's death, Samuel went to stay with his daughter and her family in Peterborough, where he died on 12th December 1931, aged 86. He was buried back at South Kyme.

WITH MY CAMERA-MAN AROUND NORTH AND SOUTH KYME.
[Various photographs of the village and inhabitants, including the following, which is accompanied by the photograph at the top of this page:]
    MR. S.G. [sic] COULSON.
At South Kyme, I had the pleasure of chatting with Mr. S.G. Coulson, a native of the village, who is in his 82nd year. He was not only born in the village, but except for a short while during which he attended a Boston school, he has never been elsewhere. His father, he told me, kept the Tower Inn, in South Kyme, until it was pulled down in 1907. Mr. Coulson used to help his father in the latter's busines as a brewer, and also in his butcher's establishment. Mr. Coulson himself, for 18 years kept the Hume Arms, at South Kyme, only retiring six years ago. He spends his time gardening, and also keeps a number of fowls. He is now enjoying better health than has been his portion for many years. At the time he was engaged in brewing, he said, his constant association with hot water and steam had caused him to suffer considerably from the gout. His sight is excellent, his hearing fairly good, and he reads the papers regularly and takes a great interest in current events. He is very active and is regularly about the village. Speaking of the arrival of the motor car, Mr. Coulson said he well remembered the days when a car was quite a novely. He always thought the motor car had come to stay. It enabled the farmer to get about more, and to enjoy himself, but it lost him a lot of his horse trade. He thought tractors were a good thing, and he considered the farmers would not get their work done, if it were not for them. He remembers the time when boats passed up and down the River Kyme, doing a regular trade in corn and general goods between Lincoln, Boston, and Sleaford. Mr. Coulson, in further conversation, told me that he stood at the West-street crossing in Boston and saw the first train to arrive in Boston from Sleaford.
