Facts and Events
According to Samuel's age provided on his burial documents, Samuel was born in about 1739. Using FamilySearch there appear to be two sets of potential parents based on a birth in 1739.
I discovered that Samuel lived in Redbourne, Lincolnshire via his son who stated in census records that he was from Redbourne. While Samuel married his second wife and was buried in Redbourne it appears that he moved to Redbourne from elsewhere. On the 12th May 1779, Samuel Burwell (also spelt Burrell), his wife Sarah and their children, William, Thomas, Samuel, John and James were granted a Lincolnshire Settlement Certificate. Certificates of settlement were granted to those on rents less than £10 a year who were entitled to claim on the parish’s poor relief if it became necessary. Some of those granted certificates were working. You could claim if you had been employed in the parish for more than a year and a day or if you had an apprenticeship of at least seven years from a settled person within the parish. On the settlement certificate his son James is the only child with a number next to their name, the number 1. This is consistent with the family having been living in the parrish for at least a year and a day because James was christened in Redbourne just over a year prior on the 8th May 1778. There is also a reference to Ripton in Lindsey, which may indicate that they moved to Redbourne from the parrish immediately to the west. This is interesting because in December 1778, in Ripton in Lindsey, there is another christening for a James Borrill with parents, Samuel and Sarah. It does appear that Samuel and Sarah moved around a bit before settling in Redbourne. They were married a few towns south of Redbourne, in Glentham. Glentham is also where their eldest two sons, William and Thomas were born and a daughter, Mary was both born and buried here. It appears that they moved further south as at about the right time with parents Samuel and Sarah, John Burwell was christened in Saxby. Of their children this currently leaves Samuel's christening unaccounted for. Following the death of Sarah, Samuel remarried to a widow, Mary Baxter. References
