Facts and Events
SAMUEL JAMES BLACK was born in 1877 at Partick, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the fifth child in a family of five boys and three girls.
The IGI Records for the family list a Samuel Black born in 1866S3. This does not agree with Samuel James being born in 1877 as is listed in both 1881S1 and 1891S2 censuses. Given that there was no Samuel in the 1871 censusS4 and that the family took the trouble of listing his name as "Samuel James" the most likely explanation is that Samuel had an older brother also named Samuel who died young. Child mortality was more common during this era and families often reused names of children who died young to ensure that a name stayed in the family.
There is currently no record of Samuel past the 1891 census.
