  3.   There is an intention of marriage filed in Wendell p. 234: A Certificate of Marriage Between Sampson Pacard of Wendell aged 20 years by occupation a Farmer he was born in Wendell and the son of John & Anna Packard this will be his first Marriage And Almeda Washburn of Northfield Aged [blank] years she was born in Wendell and was the daughter of John J. Washburn, this will be her first marriage. The Intentions of Marriage by the parties above named were duly entered by me in the records of the Town of Wendell according to law. Dated at Wendell this third day of February A.D. 1853. Joel Howe - Town Clerk Pro Tempore." But Almeda m. 1854 George Williams in Greenfield (#38, name written Almira in this record, but Almeda in following records) and then again in 1859 to Willard Plumbly (#8) dying as his widow in 1918, and of course, Sampson's death record in 1857 lists him as single, so it appears this marriage never occurred. In 1855 the only Sampson Packard of appropriate age found in the state census is in prison in Charlestown, MA (left side, line 21)
