1863 May 4, Cedar Villa, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Tighlman Jones: "I received a letter from cousin Cemantha Vorhis last Saturday / it had her minature in it. She is not what we would call handsome but there is something so good in her looks that you could not help but love her."

1864 Aug. 10, Cedar Villa, Hamilton Co., OH. Ada Wyckoff wrote her cousin Tighlman Jones: "I received a letter from cousin Mattie Vorhis, they are no copperheads* I can assure you. True blue every one of them."

  • Copperheads were Northern Peace Democrats who criticized President Lincoln's administration during the Civil War. Loyal Unionists claimed the Copperheads were pro-Southern because they opposed Lincoln's attempts to free the slaves in the South, favoring, among other things, a compromise with the Confederate States to end the war. The movement reached its peak early in 1863, but Union military victories and Republican election victories in 1864 helped to end the Copperhead movement. --World Book Encyclopedia

1865 March 28, Troy, Iowa. Samantha "Mattie" Vorhis wrote her uncle Joel L. Jones and cousin Jane Love: "Ma has her health . . . Slvester is going to California [with] Cousin John Wilkinson." Mattie referred to a letter she had received from Jane Love, October 10th (1864), that she answered after the marriage of "my youngest Sister" and told Jane all about it and enclosed pieces of both their dresses. Celestia Jane Vorhis (1844-1919) was married in Davis Co., IA, October 16, 1864. Although Samantha (1845-1924) was younger than Celestia, Celestia was still Samantha's "youngest sister." Mattie also referred to a letter that Jane Love had written to "Cousin Eve" who was John Wilkinson's daughter, Evaline "Eva" (1845-1935).

We have a photograph taken in the 1860s that is identified as M. M. Vorhis (Martha M.), Wm. Vorhis (William Reece), and Mattie Vorhis. Mattie was 19 going on 20 when she wrote the 1865 letter, which roughly coincides with the age of the young woman in the photograph. Based on Samantha's marriage in Oct. 1866, the photograph was taken in or about 1865 which coincides with the styles of the women's dresses.

Mattie is an uncommon nickname for Samantha, but another young lady in Davis Co., IA, Samantha A. Beal, was also recorded as Mattie when she was enumerated with her husband, James Reagin, in 1870 (they were md. in 1866).

Mattie Vorhis was the youngest child of David Davis Vorhis and Mary M. Jones.

Among the wealth of Jones family letters is one dated May 4, 1863, from Ada Wikoff in Hamilton Co., OH, to her cousin Tighlman Jones serving in the U.S. Army. "I received a letter from cousin Cemantha Vorhis last Saturday / it had her minature in it. She is not what we would call handsome but there is something so good in her looks that you could not help but love her."

Mattie wrote a letter to relatives in Illinois, March 28, 1865, in which she described the marriage of "my youngest Sister" and enclosed pieces of both their dresses. Celestia Jane Vorhis (1844-1919) was married in Davis Co., IA, Oct. 16, 1864. Although Samantha (1845-1924) was younger than Celestia, Celestia was still Samantha's "youngest sister."

Left to right in the accompanying photograph: Martha Melvina Vorhis, brother, William Reece Vorhis, and sister, Samantha Bionca "Mattie" Vorhis, taken sometime prior to Mattie's marriage to William Lewis Crumrine, Sept. 2, 1866, in Davis Co., IA. They had three children: John E., Edward, and Mary E. Mattie and William divorced; sons John and Edward were living with their father in Ellsworth Co., KS, in 1880, while family letters indicate that daughter Mary remained with her mother.

William and Mattie lived briefly in Barton Co., MO, before returning to Davis Co.

Mattie wrote a cousin, March 14, 1875: "come over and aske your Aunt Mary which is the prttiest and best child in person / mine is very mischievous but a freer hearted child cant be found / she will divide the last and as for good looks my / My Ma always told me pretty is as pretty does so come over and see for yourselves / I have nothing to say of my own good looks but leave you to guess at it"

Another family letter dated Oct. 22, 1877, tells that "I had a letter from Martha Melvina last week / Cemantha Bionca was going to be married very soon to a widower that lived near Gloaceaters."

Mattie married Hugh Taylor in Davis Co., IA, between Oct. 22 and Dec. 10, 1877. They had six children.
