Facts and Events
Ruth probably was born at Roxbury. The printed Braintree vital records give her as Ruth Ball, but the Bass genealogy says that in the original record it reads Ruth Bass. Ruth is not included in the list of Deacon Samuel's children, but is proved to be such because both Deacon Samuel and his son Joseph made bequests to Hannah Walsbee. Also, in 1694, Deacon Samuel Bass, Roger Billings and David Walsbee gave a silver communion cup to the church -- circumstantial evidence of the family relationship. The Bass genealogy says that "two present day Genealogists think she might have been a niece or younger sister, but this seems improbable.... In Vol. 52, year 1898/9 of the N. E. Genealogical and Historic Reg. of Boston, Mrs. Alden, who had made a long study of the family and was related, states, 'This Ruth who married David Walsbee was the sister of John Bass2 and daughter of Deacon Samuel.'" The death record under the year 1659 reads "Ruth the wiffe of David Walsbee dyed the 8 ___" and is torn off. The Bass genealogy says this "must be a misprint from the original record, for Ruth (Bass) Walesbee had a daughter Elizabeth born 1675; and we find a Ruth Walsbee as Administering her half-brother David's estate in 1698." Torrey, however, indicates that David Walesbee had a third wife, Ruth (___). If this is correct, the last three children, Abigail, Mary and Elizabeth, would be by the third wife. References
