Personal history

Russell likely completed two years of high school.[8] He married Laura Bell Yazell on November 6th, 1928.[5]

Russ started working at American Rolling Mill Company at least as early as 1928,[5] and was still working there in 1940 as a tracing clerk.[8] In 1940 he indicated he worked about 40 hours per week.[8] Russ made $1,300 in 1939,[8] which is about $22,460 in 2016 dollars. And his dad, Arch, had also worked for the same company.[3]

Russ lived his entire life in Zanesville. In 1930, he and Laura were renting a home for $27 per month ($388 in 2016 dollars) on 1275 Linden Ave. in Zanesville, Ohio.[9] Laura's mother Bertha Yazell Lant lived two houses down at 1265 Linden Ave. with her children at the time, Clarice and Harvey, who were Russ's and Laura's niece and nephew.[9] By 1935, Russell and Laura had moved to 742 Brown St. in Zanesville, Ohio.[8] And in 1940 they were renting that home for $22.50 per month,[8] which is about $386 in 2016 dollars. By 1950, Russ and Laura had moved to 802 Brown St. in Zanesville, just a bit down the road from their first house.[11]

On 22 November 1941, Russell was elected as Secretary of the Zanesville Armco Independent Organization, the newly formed labor organization of the American Rolling Mill Company, where Russ worked.

Russ was active in the Eagles organization. He was elected as “conductor” (an officer position) in the Zanesville Aerie of Eagles in May 1946. On 5 April 1949 Russell was elected worthy president of Zanesville Aerie No. 302 Fraternal Order of Eagles, at the annual election in the hall on North Third Street, Zanesville, Ohio. And an extant photo of Russ (he is on the far left) at an Eagles event from June 1957 shows he was still active then. One can only speculate, but the smile he's wearing in that photo, only six month's after Laura's untimely death, probably means the Eagles organization gave Russ great joy and helped get him through the hard times.

Russ was a private pilot who flew his plane of his own field in McConnellsville, Ohio, which he operated with Floyd Mautz.[16] On June 21, 1947, Russ earned his “radio-telephone” license.[16] This license allowed him to operate a Taylorcraft airplane.[16] Taylorcrafts were single-pilot airplanes popular in the 1940s and 1950s.
