MARRIAGE: By 1633 (and probably by 1631) Sarah _____ (she is named in the records of all children born at Watertown). She married (2) at Ipswich 7 November 1658 JOHN GAGE and died at Newbury 7 July 1681.

An English origin for Robert Keyes was proposed in 1970, but has more recently been shown to be incorrect [TAG 46:150-54, TAG 65:12].

Great Migration finds little other than a few land records and births of later children at Watertown before Robert died at perhaps 40 years of age with 8 children under age. The sketch remarks, "In some ways, Robert Keyes looks like a typical member of the Great Migration: a solid married man with a family in progress, who is in a record made just before his death called "Mr." But in other ways he does not fit the mold; he did not become a town proprietor, he did not become a freeman, and he does not appear to have left any estate at his death. Perhaps the discovery of his English origin, when it is made, will throw some light on these irregularities in the brief New England career of Robert Keyes."

link to PDF Robert Keyes arrived in Watertown in 1637 from Buckenham, Norfolk. He probably purchased the William Wilcocks homelot in Watertown at that date. Vital records of Watertown recorded by Simon Eyre were not recorded until 1644 and included children born in England. Sarah2 Swett (John1 Swett), bp. New Buckenham 6 May 1610; d. "Robt. Key for unseemly behavior toward Goody Newell to sit in stocks at Lynn one hour with her, and one hour at Cambridge before Lecture on 4th day of next month."

I can only think of two possible "Goody Newells" of Lynn in 1638. Either Mary Woodland wife of Thomas Newhall c1594-1674 of Lynn or Mary White, second wife of Anthony Newhall c1600-1656 of Lynn. Mary Woodland was likely too old to be having an affair with Robert Keyes so it was more likely Mary White, the second wife of Anthony Newhall. She could have been roughly the same age as Robert Keyes and Abraham Newhall had no children with her after this date. No death date is found for her and she is not named in Abraham's will.
