EFIA states Robert attended CT Agricultural College and then went to West Point in 1901, graduating in 1905. He attended Coast Artillery School from 1910-1911 and from 1911-1914 was instructor in the Dept of Chemistry at West Point. 1918 he was called to Washington as office chief of Coast Artillery and rose to rank of Colonel. In 1920 he was commissioned Major. 1924 he became a student at the Army War College.
