Contrary to the family tradition about brothers PAUL COCHRAN and ROBERT COCHRAN mentioned in Part II, I believe that there were 2 PAUL COCHRANs - a PAUL COCHRAN SR., brother of ROBERT COCHRAN #3, and his son PAUL COCHRAN JR. This based on the following evidence:
    1. One (and only one) reference to a deed dated 18 Nov. 1791 witnessed by PAUL COCHRAN JR. ("Cabarrus County, NC Abstracts of Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1793-1797 and Deed Books 1, 2, and 3, 1793-1801" by Lois M.P. Schneider).
    2. Deed dated 17 Jun 1788 PAUL COCHRAN and wf MARTHA (M) to ROBERT BEAN ... ("Genealogical Deed Abstracts - Mecklenburg Co., NC - Books 10-14" by Herman W. Ferguson. PAUL COCHRAN JR.'s wife was MARTHA GREER (G).
    3. Reference to the estate of MARTHA COCHRAN dated 7-19-1803 and 10-18-1803 in which the executor was PAUL COCHRAN ("Excerpts from Cabarrus Co., NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions April 17, 1797 - April 17, 1805" by Margaret Bost [1994). MARTHA COCHRAN, wife of PAUL COCHRAN JR., did not die until 1835. MARTHA COCHRAN, wife of ROBERT COCHRAN #1, LWT was proven 7-18-1798 by ROBERT COCHRAN (husband) and testimony by WILLIAM and JOHN COCHRAN (sons).
    4. From the W.E.Parham Papers: "He (PAUL COCHRAN JR.) left a large family, a widowed sister named RHEA and a cousin, with possibly a brother or two in that section."
    5. From the W.E. Parham Papers: "A letter dated June 13, 1851 from ROBERT COCHRAN, Prairie Bird, Shelby Co., IL to Dear Brother (to JAMES COCHRAN) [ROBERT and JAMES were sons of PAUL COCHRAN JR.] letters received from C.W. COCHRAN and H. COCHRAN since I left Tennessee, have met JOHN COCHRAN, aged 93 [b1758], a full cousin of Father's. He is 15 miles East of Shelbyville, IL, he has a son JOHN, son JAMES at Cochin [sic] Grove, who has 4 boys; a son WILLIAM, a teacher, and RUFUS. The aged JOHN COCHRAN held on to my hand and said you are the first blood kin I have seen in over forty years, then he told me of all the old friends in Carolina, which he left 42 years ago [1809], stayed 17 years in KY, then here in Illinois ever since. He addressed his letter to East TN Blount Co., Cloyd Creek."
    6. The 1790 Mecklenburg Co., NC Census numbers for PAUL COCHRAN were 2-4-2-0-0. These numbers could represent PAUL COCHRAN SR. and PAUL COCHRAN JR. 16+ males, JOHN COCHRAN, JAMES COCHRAN, ISAAC COCHRAN, and PAUL COCHRAN under 16 males, MARTHA ______, wife of PAUL COCHRAN SR., and MARTHA GREER, wife of PAUL COCHRAN JR. females. MARY COCHRAN might have died prior to census time.
