Robert Anderson (June 14, 1805 – October 26, 1871) was an American military leader. He served as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War, known for his defense of Fort Sumter when the Confederates bombarded it and forced its surrender to start the war. He was a major then and is often referred to as Major Robert Anderson. He became a general and was given command in Kentucky; he was removed and given lesser roles in the war.
