Richard (35 yrs old) was invited to go deer hunting with Raymond J. Leban (27yrs old) on November 20th 1954. Raymond had only been hunting for 3 years and never shot one. After Richie was done hunting for the day he went into the woods, as he did every year to bring home a Christmas tree. He cut a tree and was dragging it out of the woods when Raymond Leban heard him and thought he was a bear. Leban ran towards the cabin and Richard crossed his path and Raymond Leban shot Richie from 17 paces away. Richard was shot and killed instantly 3 miles North of Eagle River at 4:30pm on Chain of Lakes Road. Raymond Leban who resided at 1111-B S 26th street in Milwaukee was given 11 months probation and charged with careless use of firearms. One reason the judge was easy on him was that he had a 4 month old baby.
