Received patent for 140 acres of land on Smith Creek in 1797 in Pendleton County, Virginia. Received patent for 20 acres of land on Smith Creek in 1799.

December 3, 1799 Richard and wife Nancy sold 64 acres to William Davis for 6 pounds out of land patented to Richard Johnson March 1797 on Smith Creek and West Branch of the South Branch. Both signed their names with a mark.

Richard Johnson's Will: In the name of God Amen. I Richard Johnson of the County of Pendleton and state of Virginia being in perfect health and of sound mind and memory but knowing it is appointed for all men once to die have thought proper to make my last will and testament as follows to wit. In primus, I will and bequeath that all the estate both real and personal of which I may die possessed of, after discharging my just debts, shall be and remain in possession of my beloved wife Nancy Johnson during her natural life or during her widowhood but in case she marry I will that after deducting her dower to be paid to her as soon as convenient after my decease that the residue of my estate both real and personal shall be sold at public sale and the money arising from such sale to be equally divided amongst all my children. Item, I will that Jeremiah Howel a natural son of my wife Nancy Johnson, and John Johnson a natural son of my son John Johnson be considered among my own children to enjoy an equal share of my estate with them. Item, I will that if my wife Nancy Johnson should die in her widowhood that all my estate both real and personal which may remain at her decease be sold at public sale and the monies arising from such sale to be equally divided among the children aforesaid in like manner as is already set forth in case she marry and that the share which may fall to each of my children shall be paid to each as they may arrive to lawful age and not before, and lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my beloved wife Nancy Johnson sole executor of this my last will and testament ratifying this and no other to be my last will. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 12th day of March 1803.
