- DUNEDIN, 5 June 1872, The strike by the Police for increased I wages has resulted in nineteen of their number having to leave the Force permanently. Yesterday they received the reply of the Commissioner to their memorial, stating that the Government declined to accede to the request of the men, adding, that their application was couched in such terms as to clearly indicate that they were not alive to the gravity of the offence of which they had been guilty, and that the application was one which, if acceded to, would be utterly subversive of all discipline. The members whose connection with the Force has been thus severed, are Sergeants Maloney, Coneys, and Keligher, and Constables Coffey, Ryder, Drew, M'Mahon, Hodgins, Walsh, Cotter, Ross, O'Donnell, Haldane, Carter, Turnbull, Cosgrove, Taylor, Skirvine, and M'Cann. As, since the dismissal of the men, a large number of applications for appointments as constables have been received, it may be as well to state what will-constitute eligibility in applicants, namely—they must be under 30 years of age, at least 5ft. lOin. in height, and must be found by a medical examination to be of strong constitution. They must also be able to read and write well, and produce satisfactory testimonials as to character.

- 28 July 1893, IN MEMORIAM.
Haldane.— April 27, 1893, Richard Haldane, dearly beloved husband of Lizzie Haldane; aged fortyfour years. Deeply regretted. Gone, but not forgotten. With patience great he bore his pain ! That suffered him to die ; ! The hearts that wished him back again | Will meet him by-and-by. In dreams we see thy sweet, dear face, And kiss thy gentle brow ; And whisper, as we loved you then, We love your memory now. Our hearts are sad and weary, And the tears drop from our eyes, Thinking of our dear one In the cold grave where you lie. Inserted by his loving wife and children.
