"Richard1 Goldsmith was born probably ca. 1622. He died at Wenham on 18 May 1673. He married 1643, Mary_____. Mary married on 25 November 1674 John Abbey. … Richard was almost certainly the brother of Thomas Goldsmith. … Perley says Richard and his wife lived in Salem before removing to Wenham. However, it is possible that Richard and Mary did not actually move. Initially Wenham was set off from Salem along an uninhabited natural division but there wasn't agreement on the actual boundary until 1667. Perhaps they were just in the part of Salem that became Wenham. Richard was a shoemaker. … Richard's death was a sudden and unusual one. He was

killed by lightning on Sunday, May 18, 1673, in the house of the parish minister, Rev. Mr. Newman, lately deceased, in the presence of Rev. Mr. Higginson, who supplied the pulpit for the day, and others. A dog under his chair was killed by the same stroke. Rev. Increase Mather alluded to the event in his work, Remarkable Providences. …

Administration of Richard Goldsmith's estate was granted to his wife Mary. The estate was inventoried on 26 May 1673 by John 'Abye,' Sr., and Walter Fairfield. It amounted to £15 clear and was attested to by his widow Mary in Ipswich Court on 30 September 1673."
