p 131 - RICHARD EDELEN, GENT. (1671-1760) AND HIS DESCENDANTS.
Richard Edelen, son of Richard and Elizabeth Edelen, was born in or about 1671, according to his deposition in 1752 when he declared himself 82 years of age. He failed to pursue the occupations of his brothers, that is, gentlemen planters, but became an architect, contractor, and builder which in that day was designated as "carpenter". Many of the early eighteenth century homes of Charles County, some of which are still standing, are no doubt examples of his craftmanship.
He is sometimes credited with three wives.* His first wife, however, was Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Mary Hagoe, of Charles County, whom he married prior to 1713. Thomas Hagoe died testate in 1716, and named his daughter Sarah Edelen 1. She was perhaps the mother of most of his children, inasmuch as her death occurred after 1727. His widow, however, was Anne, daughter of Ignatius and Sophia (Beedle) Craycroft, who had previously been the wife of Luke Gardiner. At court in 1747, an Ann Edelen gave her age as 58 and declared herself to be the wife of Richard Edelen." ...

    * The Semmes papers at the Maryland Historical Society claim that his second wife was Ann, daughter to Raphael Neale.

See GARDINER, Vol. II, Descendants of Richard Edelen, pg. 2:
... Richard Edelen, born 1671 in St. Mary's County, Maryland, died 1761 in Lanterman, Bryantown, Charles County, Maryland. He married (1) 1691, in Charles County, Maryland, Anna Maria Neale; he married (2) in 1694, in Charles County, Maryland, Sarah Hagoe (Hagan). ...

... Richard Edelen purchased and sold several large tracts of land during his lifetime but the purchase of Lanterman from John Baptist Boarman on 12 Nov 1718 must have made the greatest impact on his life as it remained in the Edelen family for several generations. It also caused him to move from Prince George's County where he owned several large tracts. Another tract in Charles County which he owned by the name of "New York" lying on Back Creek on Cobb Neck in southern Charles County also remained in the Edelen family for a number of generations. ...

... His last dwelling plantation was "Askington" on the east side of the Zekiah Swamp near Newport, which was inherited by his grandson, Edward, son of Edward, after his widow, Ann Craycroft, widow of Luke Gardiner, was deceased. On this plantation the Edelen family had a chapel erected approximately where St. Mary's Church at Newport now stands. This may be the location also of his internment, if he was not laid to rest at Lantermand, also on the Zekiah near Bryantown. It is assumed that Ann Craycroft, his widow, was interred with her first husband and the father of her children, Luke Gardiner, in the family burial plot at Warburton Manor. ...
