Death of Mr. Richard Butler.
Mr. Richard Butler, a native and life-long member of one of its most prominent and wealthy families, and without exception esteemed and admired by all who knew kim [sic] for a hundred fine traits of mind and character, a noble and blameless life, died Monday afternoon. He had been spending some time at "the Cedars" with his son, Thos. W. Butler, his age and its increasing infirmities inducing him, - who had been so strong-to enjoy to its fullness in the even-tide of life the tribute of devotion from a true son and his family. Mr. Butler had been in quite his usual health within two days previous to his death, when a violent cold set in, which at his age and with other complications, proved fatal.
Mr. Butler had reached the age of eighty-eight years and two months. His life had been a quiet and retired one, but he embodied what was fine as man, as citizen and as Christian. He was a devout churchman and for many years was senior warden of Grace Episcopal Church, which has ever been the beneficiary of the Butler family. Indeed no good cause has ever pleaded in vain for their assistance. Numberless are the charities, the kindnesses, bestowed.
In like manner, as a member of the Police Jury for many years until he determined to leave the board on account of his age, he and his colleagues employed their best judgment and most conscientious financiering to clear the parish of the enormous debt, the legacy from the days of reconstruction.
He leaves a sister, Miss Mary E. Butler, and one son, Thos. W. Butler of West Feliciana, three grand-children, and a number of nieces and nephews in two generations.
A noble man has gone hence to his reward. His body lies at rest in Grace Cemetery. His soul hears the plaudit at the eternal gates "Well done."
