Savage (Volume I, p. 252) estimates he was son of Clement. But that was wrong. NEHGS, Register, Volume 62, page 183: Agreement made between those concerned in the estate of Richard Briggs of Taunton dec'd. William Briggs, eldest son, is to have the twelve acre lot expressed in the inventory, John Briggs is to have the new house and the land belonging thereto, and is to maintain his mother, widow of said Richard Briggs, "fo long as She bears his father's name," also he is to take care for the bringing up of the young children. Also we have agreed that the four youngest sons are to have the home lot, and the three daughters six pounds each. Agreement dated Dec. 13, 1692 and signed by Rebeckah X Briggs, William Briggs, John Brigs and Nathaniel Thayer. Witnessed by Jonah X Linkon and James X Woodward who made oath to the same Dec. 15, 1692 before John Saffin Jus.: Entered Mar. 16, 1694 by John Cary Registr. References
