"Musachiell Bernard and his sister Mary Barnard, wife of Roger Williams of Providence, were children of Rev. Richard Bernard of Batcombe, Somerset [NEHGR 113:191-92]. RIchard Bernard was significant in New England history beyond this genealogical contribution, as several of his communicants at Batcombe joined Rev. Joseph Hull in the migration to New England in 1635 [Hotten 283-86]. In addition, Bernard, as a convinced non-separating Puritan, engaged in a pamphlet war with Rev. John Cotton over the issue of the church government."
