ELON — Mr. Richard Brantley Barnwell, Sr., 73, of 1 Hickory Drive, died at his home Tuesday August 20, 2002.

A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Robert William Barnwell, Sr. and Willard Smith Barnwell and husband of Cornelia “Connie” Ditto Barnwell who survives.

Mr. Barnwell was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served as Deacon, Elder and teacher of the D.J. Walker Sunday School Class, was a former member of the Burlington Jaycees and American Business Club. He had formerly operated R & R Realty Co. and later retired from the office of Housing & Urban Development after serving 23 years with the government. He served as State FHA Director and Director of the Area Office of HUD in Greensboro and the Tennessee office in Knoxville. He also served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of HUD in Washington, DC. In 1991 he received the National Manager of the Year award for HUD. Mr. Barnwell was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees where he served as 1st Vice President. He was a Lieutenant in the Navy during the Korean War. For many years, he was very active in the Republican Party. He served in many capacities and ran for Congress on the Republican ticket in 1966.

Survivors include his wife, Cornelia “Connie” Ditto Barnwell of the home; sons, Richard Brantley Barnwell, Jr.. and wife Joyce of Eden, Holton D. Barnwell and wife Teresa of Costa Mesa, CA and Kenneth M. Barnwell and wife Sherma of Greensboro; daughter, Mrs.. Beverly B. Smith and husband Todd of Elon; brothers, Joseph C. Barnwell of Avon Park, FL and Julian Forrest “Pete” Barnwell and wife Lana of Raleigh; sisters, Mrs.. Betty Lynn Cooler and husband Harold of Charlotte and Mrs.. Eleanor Kirkpatrick of Graham; grandchildren, Grayson Barnwell, Matthew Johnson, Alexis Smith and Christina Marsh. He was preceded in death by brothers, R.W. Barnwell, Jr.. and Willard Holt Barnwell.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 10:00 AM Friday August 23, 2002, by Dr. Ron Shive, pastor and Rev. Genie Martin, associate pastor. Members of the D. J. Walker Sunday School Class are asked to sit as Honorary Pallbearers. Interment will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, at other times at the home. .
