Facts and Events
This was a self-written record I discovered in one of many binders of information given to me by my Uncle: "My Grand Father William Edgell, was a Pioneer Settler on land of about 300 acres belonging to the state of Virginia lying on the south forkof Fishing Creek in Wetzel County. In about the year 1818, soon after his marriage to Sara Barker my Grandmother, laying a Land Warrant on this tract of land as allowed by the las\ws of Virginia; upon which he lived until he died in about the year1845, and raised a family of twelve (12) children; - 5 boys and 7 girls. My Father James Edgell being the first born in feb. 1820. In 1843 he was married to Mary Cain my Mother and Daughter of Thomas Cain. He then being 23 and she 16 years of age,respectively. To them was Born 17 Children (Single Births), 9 Boys and 8 Girls, all of whom grew to be men and women and was all married propr to Father and Mothers Death. He died in 1895 and mother died in 1898. I was the first son and seconbornin the family....Jan. 4th, 1846....My Parents then living at the mouth of Buck Run, Near where Pricetown now is. They owned a small farm there, in WetzelCounty Va., on which they lived until the spring of 1860, when they moved to ashanty onFallen Timber Run, on land owned by Father and being a part of the Old Farm of my Grandfather. In 1861, my father built a new hewed log house on theMain Fishing Creek, below where the town of Smig\thfield now stands, having purchased all theoriginal farm his Father owned in his lifetime. The Civil War having commenced in the spring of 1861, between the North and South. On the 1st day of Jan. 1862 father Volunteered in the Union Army with Elizs Shreve and Abraham Barker his Brothersin law. In Co. H. 1st W.Va. Inft. Elias Shreve was mortally wounded in battle May 12th, 1864, at New Market va., and died in service. Barker and Father served out their term of three years and was honorably discharged Jan. 1st, 1865. Father Losthis Health March 1862 by contracting cold on measles at Winchester Va., which disabled him the remainder of his life. On fathers going into the army the heavy farm work was taken up by Mother and us children and we raised the crop the summer of1862. My Father was converted to the Christian Religion in his early manhood and became a local preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, which relation he sustained until he died, preaching the gospel in private homes, in the shade of trees inthe summer time, and school houses throughtout all the section where he lived, commencing to preach when 21 years of Age. My mother became a Christian soon after her marriage to Father, joined the church with him and lived a consistant christianuntil her death. ... They lay buried in the country Graveyard on the Morgan Farm near where Father was Born and where the subject of this sketch was born. All the children of these parents were living at theirDeath. ... The Namesof Fathers Children: Boys- William N. (Ther writer herof); Thomas B.; James A.; Henry (Deceased); Ezra A.; John W.; Charles W.; vincent; and Grant. - Girls- Eliza, the first born, now deceased; Ann; Elisabeth;Sarah; Catharing; Mary; Margaret (deceased); and Martha, all of whom have raised large families of children except sister Anna. ... On the 3rd Day of Dec. 1862, by consent ofmy Parents I volunteered in the Union Army in Co. B. Indpt.W. Va., Esempts - Then lacking 30 days of being 17 years of Age. And served in Co. B. 15 months-was discharged and re-inlisted in Co. H. 1st. W. Va. finally discharged July 22nd, 1865, at Wheeling, W. Va. ..." References
