Apprenticeship in Turner's trade in Mansfield, Ohio for 2 years. 1858 returned to Bellville, then went to California for 6 months and then went into mining on Molquelumne Hill for about 3 years. Then 8 years in hardware business. During Civil War was leading man in raising the Moquelumne Hill Rife Co. 1866 partnership with brother in dry-goods business in Bellville until 1876 he retired. Was also an officer in US Senate until 1879.
