Came to U.S. from Sarnia, Canada by ferry boat to Port Huron, Michigan on July 11, 1865 at the age of 22. He declared his intention to become a U.S. citizen on May 19, 1887 at the age of 44 at Tawas City, Michigan, Circuit Court of Iosco County. He petitioned for Naturalization on October 31, 1911 at the age of 68. In his declaration of Intention 5-19-1887 he had to renounce his Allegiance to the Queen of Great Britain. Nelson was witty and had a sense of humor. He also had a mustache and liked to drink and would spend his pay on drink. He had a stroke in his later years which affected his left leg and arm and he walked with a cane. He died of complications of a broken hip. Beanhill School and Road in Barton City is named after him.
