Raymond Towne passed away, 25 July 2002 at home , in Hanson, Ma at aprox. 9: 40 pm EST. He just found out, a couple weeks before, he had cancer and went down hill extreemly fast He was the first official town historian of Hanson. Before his retirement in 1979, he worked at the Colburn-Wilbert Vault Co. He previously worked at the Wes-Mill Box Co., and Ocean Spray Cranberry Co. During WWII, Ray worked at the Hanover Fireworks, a factory that made ammunition for the US military. He was a board member of the Hanson Historical Commission for 10 years, serving as chairman for three years, and a board member of the Hanson Historical Society for 18 years. Her was also a member of the Hanson Senior Crackerbarrel Organization, an editorialist for the Senior Newsletter, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Ray played an instrumental role in the completion of Hanson's first state-certified survey of historic places in 1996. His hobbies included woodworking, photography, antique cars and history. He leaves his wife, Dorothy M (Weeden) Towne, two sons, Harold C. Towne and wife Joan, and Raymond G. Towne and wife Linda, Three daughters, Joyce A. Green, Nancy L. Spoerke and husband Frank, and Robin L. Bousquet and husband Bob. He also leaves two sisters, Norma Swayngim, and Vonnie Bastburg,15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Shirley W. Towne. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. References
