MARCUS, Iowa -- Ray Schmillen, 81, of Marcus died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus, with the Rev. Liz Pfeiffle officiating. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion F.I. Goodburn Post 517 of Marcus. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus. Ray was born Nov. 26, 1922, in O'Brien County, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Edna (Johnson) Schmillen. He attended rural school and graduated from Marcus High School in 1940. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on Jan. 15, 1943, at Camp Dodge, Iowa. He spent three years in the European Theater of War based in Warton, England

He married Marian Stowater on Jan. 7, 1943, at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus. After returning home, the couple farmed his father's farm south of Marcus and operated a large dairy. In January 1987, after 41 years of farming, they moved into Marcus where they still reside.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served on several boards. The couple spent 14 years wintering in Alamo, Texas. He loved football, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. He served on the Co-op board and the Marcus-Amherst Cemetery board. Survivors include his wife, Marian of Marcus; three sons and their wives, Steve and Ina Schmillen of Elkhorn, Neb., Mikel and Gloria Schmillen of Spencer, Iowa, and Kent and Kathy Schmillen of Cherokee, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Michelle Clinton, Cyndi Schmillen, Sherry Schmillen, Angie Mingus, Tricia Greinert, Mandy Schmillen and Luke Schmillen; six great-grandchildren, Nigel and Ava Clinton, Cordell Schmillen, Stella Schmillen and Calvin and Hallee Mingus; a brother and his wife, Lyle and Iris Schmillen of Seal Beach, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; along with an extended family at the rental center in Storm Lake, Iowa, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Wilmar Schmillen; a grandson, Cory Schmillen; and a granddaughter, Sue Ann Schmillen. Memorials may be directed to the Kidney or Diabetes Foundation.
