April 15, 1902, Wallace King was away for the night. His second cousin Alma, the 18-year-old daughter of Charles King came to spend the night with them. The house caught fire. Five-year-old Rachel alone escaped, the youngest occupant of the house. Her mother, sisters Veva and Verna and her cousin Alma all perished in the flames. Two months later, Alma's father died of grief.
