R. Cecil Ayers, 88, of Jamison Street, Parkersburg, died March 14 at Camden-Clark Hospitol [Parkersburg].

He was born in Windy, Wirt County, a son of the late Alva J. and Clara Marshall Ayers. He graduated from Elizabeth High School and Glenville State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree in elementary and junior high education with a major in social studies and a minor in English. He received his Master's degree from Ohio University in 1951. He worked in public education for 42 years, starting as an elementary teacher in a one-room school in the Steele District at Gates Ridge School. He was principal of Elizabeth Elementary School. He later taught at the old Washington Junior High School on Seventh Street and at Franklin Junior High School. He Retired in 1970. He was a charter member of the Elizabeth Lions Club, serving as the first secretary. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Mount Olivet Masonic Lodge of Parkersburg, the state education association, Wood County Retired Teachers Association, and the National Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perkerburg and served on various committees, such as superintendent of church school and the board of trustees.

He is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Gault of Parkersburg and Dorothy Lockhart of Elizabeth; one brother, Kenneth Ayers of Elizabeth, and several neices and nephews.

He was proceded in death by his wife, Virginia Burton Ayers, in 1981.

Services were March 18 at the Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Gerald R. Morgan officiating. Burial was in Evergreen North Cemetary [near PArkersburg].
