If James has the same father as the rest of his mother's children, then he married his half-sister. He was born shortly after a lawsuit exposed the couple, however, so his father may be someone else. One entry on WorldConnect, no longer available [1], indicates that the father of Potter (along with Robert) was Stephen D. Burton (b. 1813). No sources are listed, and the file also incorrectly lists Elizabeth Peak (b. 1826) as Susan’s child. However, if a male Greenwood descendant could be identified, this theory could be tested through the Burton DNA project.
