BIOGRAPHY: Encyclopedia of Latter-day Saint History By Donald Q. Cannon, Richard O. Cowan, Arnold K. Garr. Polly Knight, matriarch of a prominent early family in the Church, was born 16 April 1774, in Guilford, Vermont, to Joseph Peck and Elizabeth Read. She married Joseph Knight Sr. in about 1795. In 1808 they moved to Colesville, New York, where the Knights befriended Joseph Smith by 1826. Polly was baptized 28 June 1830 by Oliver Cowdery. She bore seven children, including Newel Knight, all of whom joined the Church. Polly was the first Saint to die in Jackson County, Missouri (6 August 1831); Joseph Smith preached at her funeral. |
