Phillip was about 5'9" with dark hair, eyes and complexion, and by occupation a farmer. At the beginning of the War of 1812, Phillip was aresident of Ontario according to his pension papers. The story goes that he fought on the British side at the beginning of the war. This is not verified, but it is interesting to note the following: Colonel Joseph Willcocks was a Canadian officer who, according to the CanadianHistorical Review, Vol. XXXI, No. 2, June 1950, "went over to the Americans and led a force of renegades calling themselves the "Canadian Volunteers" who ravaged the Canadian frontier during 1813 and 1814". According to Phillip's pension papers and American land bounty, he served in the Canadian Volunteers under Capt. Frisby's Regt., commanded byLt. Col. Joseph Willcocks. He enlisted November 4, 1813 and was discharged in Batavia, NY on June 18, 1815. According to Ruth E. Steward's1931 application to the National Society United States Daughters of1812, Phillip took part in the Battle of Queenston Heights on Oct. 13, 1812 where he was wounded in the leg and played dead when the victorious British Army came seeking prisoners. He later dragged himself awayand escaped to Buffalo. Mrs. Steward (Phillip's great-granddaughter)also claims that he fought in the Battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25, 1814. Both of these stories were told to her by older members of the family. After the war he was granted a Land Warrant and settled in Suspension Bridge, Niagara County, New York, as a farmer. "Landmarks ofNiagara County, New York", published in 1897, on page 179, states that Phillip arrived in 1815 and settled near the Lockport Road. He is buried in Witmer Cemetery, Town of Niagara, New York. The stonehouse he built was still standing on Packard Road in 1996.
