Facts and Events
The Stoops and Shankland families intermarried over several generations. Various sources show conflicting data on the two pioneer lines of William and Phillip. "Philip and William Stoops, brothers, came as Pioneers from Pennsylvania and settled in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Philip, the Pioneer, was married twice. By his first wife, Polly Ferguson, he had three sons -- John, William, and Philip -- and four daughters -- Ann, Ailsie, Becca and Polly; and by his second wife, Aggie Morgan, three sons -- James, Thomas and Jessie and three daughters -- Sallie, Nancy and Marget. John, [A. B. Stoops'] grandfather, died in Nicholas County, Kentucky. The balance of the family removed to Hamilton County, Indiana. William married Zerua Burk. Philip married Margaret Ferguson, a niece of his mother. Ann married George Burk. Ailsie [Alicia] married Moses Burk, brother of George. Becca married Albert Betts and Polly married John Wheeler. James married Jane Ferguson. Thomas' wife's name is unknown. Jessie married Jane Darrough. Sallie married John Gilkey. Nancy and Marg's husbands' names unknown." {Transcription of letter from Dr. Alexander B.
