During World War I Phil was stationed on a mine sweeper in England. Once it was discovered he could play the Piano he was reassigned from duties where his hands could be injured to performing in the ships galley & at officers partys ashore for the remainder of his time in the service. Phil Claff played the accordion in the 1940s, with comedian Henry Morgan, sponsored by the makers of Marshmallow Fluff. I (Mark Shapiro) dated a woman by the name of Valerie Chevanne. When I met her father Paul Chevanne who was a pianist I found out that he & Phil would often cover for each other when busy with family business ... attending weddings & Funerals etc.
