Philemon was a 1765 graduate of Harvard College. In 1777 he sailed with 130 other seamen on the privateer Gloucester. After sending two loads of seize cargo back from Newfoundland, the ship and its crew were never heard from again.

    "His school being closed by the war, he signed on to the privateer GLOUCESTER, a new vessel with eighteen carriage guns and a complement of 130 men. They sailed in July, 1777, sent two prizes back from Newfoundland, and were never heard of again."
