Peter Walton was born on 4th May 1885 at 3 Potterrow in the city of Edinburgh. He was the son of Mary Helen Walton, formerly Hughes, and her husband Neil McCallum Walton, a chairmaker. Peter appears in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with his parents and siblings at Thomsons Court on Abbey Strand in Edinburgh. In 1901 he was working as an apprentice glass maker.

In 1926, aged 41, Peter married Mary Jane Scott. At the time of their marriage Peter was living at 27 Maryfield in Edinburgh and working as a telegraph storekeeper. He also reported that his father had died by this time, but his mother was still living. Peter and Mary Jane had one daughter together. She went on to marry and have children in Peter's lifetime.

Peter died in Edinburgh on 7th March 1958, aged 72. Mary survived him by about two years.
