He may be the son of George W. Smith 1800-1853 and Mary Barkshire of Bourbon Co., Kentucky and Vermillion Co., Illinois. He is shown as 'Permeas' in several WorldConnect databases.

 "Parmenas G. Smith, who after a life of industry and indefatigable toil is now spending the evening of his span of years in retirement at his pleasant home in West Lebanon,Warren County, is a native of Bourbon County, Kentucky, his birth having occurred October 9, 1821. He was one of eight children, three of whom were sons, of George W. and Mary Smith, who in 1830 emigrated to Vermillion County, Illinois. Two of the sons and two of the daughters are still living. The father George W. Smith died March 30, 1853. It was in 1840 that P.G. Smith came to Warren County, and December 11th of that year his marriage to Eliza M. Shankland was celebrated...Mr. and Mrs. Smith are devoted members of the Christian church, and have endeavored to embody In their lives the noble principles in which they believe.  In the 1860 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, Parmenas Smith is 38 farmer from Kentucky, Eliza M. 41 from Ohio, 'Armietta J' 14, Amanda 13, Sarah J. 10, and Ann M. 1 -- all Indiana -- and farm laborers William D. Farmer 16 IN; Hiram Farmer 11 IN; Henry Hoover 28 IN; John Kellott 21 Ireland; Joseph H. Siddons 15 IN; James R. (Medows?) 22 North Carolina; and Harriet Idall 19 school teacher. {p. 615}
  In the 1870 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, 'Parmenas Smith' is a farmer, age 49 from Kentucky, with $20,200 in real estate and $2,020 personal.  Wife Eliza M. is 51, born Ohio; and [their daughter?] Annie is 11, born Ohio.  Also in the household are James Taylor, 18, and James McElhemes(?), 26, laborers from Indiana; and her parents David and Sarah 'Shanklan', both 74. David has $7,000 real estate and $3300 personal and was born in Kentucky, while Sarah was born in Ohio. {p. 355} Next to them are married daughters Amanda Cronkhite, and Sarah Whitten with their husbands.
 In the 1880 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, next door to her cousin Kendall Shankland, 'R. G. Smith' is a farmer, age 59 from Kentucky.  His wife Eliza is 60, born Ohio, parents Kentucky.  They also have a servant, Mary Burns, age 20 from Indiana (parents Ireland.) {p.49 a}

 In the 1900 census for Pike Twp, West Lebanon, Warren Co., Indiana; Permelius G. Smith is 78, born Oct 1821 in Kentucky (parents same), married 59 yrs farmer; his wife Eliza M. is 81, b. Jul 1818 in Ohio (parents Kentucky), 4 of 5 children living. {ed 10, sh 3b, p. 62}  (Annette and Amanda living within doors of them)
