Patrick served in the I.R.A., Drumalee Company, Belturbet Battlion, Cavan Brigade of Óglaigh na hÉireann from November 5th,1919 until July 8th, 1921. He was Captain of the Company, and received "AN BONN SEIRBHISE (1917-1921)" {THE SERVICE (1917-1921) MEDAL}, April 1, 1952 . According to his own testimony, Patrick participated in:

               "October 22, 1920        - Raid for arms
                December 22, 1920    - Blocking of roads
                January 15, 1921        - Raid for arms
                April 25, 1921             - Commendered clothing for flying column
                April 28-May 7, 1921  - Billeted and guarded Column while they were                
                                                      forming upon their arrival from Belfast
                June 5, 1921              - Burning of intended Military Barracks
                June 22, 1921            - Took part in Belfast boycott, burned bread van."
