Oscar Garretson married Dollie Jackson, my father’s sister. Uncle Os and my grandfather, A. H. Jackson had a partnership drilling and working oil and gas wells in Calhoun and a few in Ritchie County. Grandfather put up the money and Os put up the rigs and worked the wells. That partnership lasted until Grandfather died in 1941.

When Os was finally old enough to collect Social Security he would not apply for it. He felt like it was welfare and he dang well wasn't going to apply for welfare. His family finally convinced him that he had been paying into it for all these years and now it was time to take some back. To him taking money from the government reflected a bad character quality. Only "shiftless, no-'count" (lazy) folks 'went on the dole'. My how attitudes have changed!
