O.P. Knight, one of the leaders in local aviation circles was seriously burned yesterday when he brought a plane he was flying down in flames on the Vail Highway.

Knight, who holds a student's license, was flying an Aronca plane belonging to E.L. Casey. Fire broke out at 600 foot altitude. The pilot attempted to side slip away from the flames, settled toward the road and made a good landing.

Freeing himself from the plane, he walked away, but was seriously burned before his flaming clothing could be extinguished. He was rushed to the Veteran's Hospital where he received medical attention. Friends stated last night that his doctors gave him an even chance of recovery with the possibilty of infection being the most dangerouse element.

After bringing the plane down Knight said that gasoline had been leaking in the cockpit before the flames broke out, indicating that a leak had developed in the gas line. Knight suffered severe burns about the arms, face and head and about the legs. His most serious burns were on the right hand, it was said.

Knight has been interested in aviation for several years. He is a charter member of the Tucson chapter of the National Aeronautical Association and has been an officer and leading figure in several Tucson aviation clubs. He helped organize a glider club here several years ago. He learned flying under Charles Mayse and Clyde Wallace.

O.P. Knight, local aviator who was burned when a small plane belonging to Mrs. Ruth Carey which he was piloting burst into flames Sunday, died yesterday. Reports from the veteran's hospital where he was rushed immediately after the accident indicate that he had inhaled some of the flames.

Initial examination, had not indicated that the fliers lungs were involved in the burns. It was reported, however, that his early death could not be accounted for by the extent of his external burns.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Parker-Grimshaw chapel with Rev. Fred W. Niedringhaus officiating.

Mr. Knight came to Tuscon from Billings,Montana, and since his arrival here had been active in aviation circles. A charter member of the National Aeronautical association, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club he has been active for many years in civic affairs. He was employed by the Waggoner Auto Parts company.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Winifred Knight, a daughter, Winifred Christine and a sister, Mrs. Alice Kuitems of Long Island.

Pallbearers will be Pete Waggoner, Everett Carey, Lon Blankenship, George Wilson, John Harrison, Roy Sanderson, Fred O. Goodell and Otto E. Myrland. Honorary pallbearers will include J.J. O'Dowd, C.J. Williams, William Bray, John S. Lyon, Edwin F. Stone and members of the Tucson Lions Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce and National Aeronautical Association.
