Orrin reports his birth date as 25 February 1820, which means that he was seven years old at the time of his mother's death in 1820. He tells us he was born in Bristol, Ontario County, New York, which was the home of his grandparents, Aaron and Anna (Yale) Rice. While his grandparents were probably dead by 1820, his mother's brother, Reuben Rice was living in Bristol that year and it is possible he was born there. We know nothing of his life between 1827 and 1860, and it is also possible that he became a part of Reuben Rices family after his mother's death.
It is interesting to note that the children and grandchildren of Orrin's siblings, Sarah Ann (Wetmore) Hawley, Myron Wetmore, Horace Whitmore, Monroe Whitmore and Orestus Wetmore remained in touch into the twentieth century. I have found nothing to indicate that the families of any of these had any contact with Orrin or his family..
Orrin was enumerated as head of household on the 1850 census of Webster, Wastenaw County, Michigan, as Orrin Whitmore, age 30. His household consisted of Susan Whitmore, age 25; Salinda Whitmore, age 4 and Marcus J. Whitmore, age 2. The 1860 census of Hudson Lenawee County, Michigan, reported the following Whitmores household: Orin, age 40; Susen, age 35, Jane, age 14; Jesse, age 12; Nancy, age 20; Marion, age 7 and Harriet, age 1. Two years later, leaving his wife at home with their young children, he enlisted in Battery I of the 1st Michigan Light Artillary and served for almost three years.
