Nellie Frances Dorothy was born on 21st October 1895 at Exeter in Devon, daughter of a gas engine labourer named Walter Francis Dorothy and his wife Sarah. Nellie appears to have been the eldest of five children. She appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with her parents and siblings in Exeter.
Nellie was married in 1920 to Bertram Stanley May. He was from Plymouth, and after their marriage they settled in Plymouth, having two children there during the 1920s. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 7 Longfield Place in Plymouth, and Bertram was working as a solicitor's clerk. They seem to have stayed at 7 Longfield Place for the rest of their lives.
Bertram died in 1975, aged 80. Nellie outlived him by eleven years and died in 1986, aged 90.
