Nehemiah Knight came from good stock-his family has long be an honored one in Rhode Island. His great-grandfather was member of the House of Representatives in 1803. He wrote a letter, dated Oct. 16, 1803, on his arrival in Washington, containing an account of the incidents of his fortnight's journey, with a fine description of the city as it then was, and a charming story of his first dinner with President Jefferson.
His great-uncle Nehemiah was elected Gov. of R.I. in 1817, and held the office four years, when he was sent to the U. S. Senate, and served there twenty years.
The subject of this sketch was a graduate of Brown University 1833. He and Henry B. Anthony, afterward Governor, roomed together during the entire course. Their room was in the third story north division, new college, and they never changed it. It was one of the pleasantest places in the University, to visit. As a young man, Nehemiah Knight was tall, rather slender, light hair, blonde complexion, blue eyes, and a very pleasant expression. He maintained a good stand for scholarship and conduct throughout the course, but the qualities for which he was most distinguished and is best remembered, were his uprightness, integrity, and perfect candor, his gentlemanly bearing, and uniform amiability. After hesitating a little about adopting his father's profession, he went to New York shortly after graduating, and engaged in the dry-goods jobbing business, which he followed until his death, at which time he was a member of the firm of Hoyt, Sprague & Co. In a letter written after the death of Mrs. Knight by a friend who knew them both long and intimately, occurs this tribute: "They both were generous, but generous without ostentation,-neither of them had any relish for what is denominated "fashionable life,"- they were domestic in their tastes and habits, and home was their rendezvous. Mr. Knight was regarded as exceedingly prosperous, but his prosperity did not incline him nor his wife to surrender old friends, whether rich or poor, for new friends, revolving in the orbit of fashionable life,- they were always the same.
I suppose we ought not to regret her departure for the spirit world, she had reached a ripe old age, and has gone to rejoin the husband of her love, and yet those of us who knew her good qualities, so abundant, cannot refrain from regret that we shall see her face no more."
